God’s Will for Prosperity: Why Abundance Is Part of the Christian Life

Prosperity is not a controversial idea in the Bible – it is a clear and consistent part of God’s will for His people. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture reveals a God who delights in blessing His children, not just spiritually, but materially and tangibly.

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
3 John 1:2 (KJV)

This verse establishes an eternal principle: spiritual growth and material prosperity are meant to grow together. God never intended believers to be spiritually rich but materially defeated.

Prosperity Is God’s Plan, Not a Worldly Distraction

As believers mature spiritually, God desires that they also increase materially. Prosperity is not greed; it is capacity—the ability to fulfill divine purpose without unnecessary limitation.

Sadly, many Christians have been restrained by what can only be described as lies of littleness—the false belief that poverty equals humility and lack equals holiness. These ideas are not biblical.

“The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.”
Proverbs 10:22

God’s blessings do not bring shame, bondage, or sorrow. They bring freedom, effectiveness, and joy.

Why the Gospel Needs Resources

Let us speak plainly: the gospel cannot advance without resources.

Church buildings, missions, outreaches, media broadcasts, humanitarian aid, books, and evangelism all require funding. Jesus Himself acknowledged the necessity of resources for ministry.

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost…?”
Luke 14:28

You need money. I need money. We all need money. Financial provision is not unspiritual—it is practical.

A Personal Ministry Experience: The Cost of Ignoring Financial Truth

While serving as a lecturer at a Bible college, I once proposed the introduction of a full course on money and prosperity for ministers into the school’s curriculum. My motivation was born out of years of real ministry experience.

Before attending Bible school, I had already spent years in active ministry. I had witnessed firsthand how financial struggles derail ministers, distract them from their calling, and weaken their effectiveness.

Yet my proposal was declined. I was perceived as someone overly concerned with “worldly things.” Some students even labeled me a “prosperity preacher,” suggesting that material matters were capturing my attention.

But I knew this truth from experience:

Once the problem of money is removed from a Christian’s life, their effectiveness becomes unstoppable.

When my intentions were misunderstood, I stepped back and left them to their ignorance. Time, however, has a way of revealing truth.

God Wants You to Prosper in Every Area of Life

Prosperity is not limited to church pulpits—it applies to every legitimate area of life.

  • You need God to prosper in your business
  • You need God to prosper in your ministry
  • You need God to prosper in your career and workplace

“And thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant…”
Deuteronomy 8:18

God gives power, wisdom, and opportunity to generate wealth for kingdom purposes.

God’s Will Is Freedom from Debt, Not Bondage

God does not desire that His children live permanently on debts and loans, borrowing endlessly and spending their income servicing liabilities.

“The borrower is servant to the lender.”
Proverbs 22:7

Debt creates limitation, pressure, and distraction. While borrowing may be necessary at times, a lifestyle of dependency is not God’s best.

“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another…”
Romans 13:8

God’s desire is financial wisdom, discipline, and abundance—not bondage.

Understanding Where Wealth Is Located

All resources belong to God.

“The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”
Psalm 24:1

However, every naira, pound, or dollar you will ever spend is on earth, not in heaven. That money is currently in the hands of people. What you need is divine wisdom, favor, and strategy—not desperation or compromise.

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom.”
Proverbs 4:7

Prosperity Without the Devil’s Help

God wants you to prosper in your business—but you do not need the devil to grow that business.

“For the blessing of the Lord… addeth no sorrow with it.”
Proverbs 10:22

Any prosperity that enslaves, corrupts, or destroys peace is not from God. Kingdom prosperity is clean, sustainable, and purpose-driven.

Prosperity for Kingdom Impact

It is the will of God that you succeed in your chosen vocation – not merely for personal comfort, but so you can support the gospel and bless lives.

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:19

Prosperity empowers generosity. When believers prosper, the gospel advances faster and farther.

Final Thoughts: Prosperity Is Capacity

Prosperity is not greed – it is capacity. It is the ability to respond to God’s call without restriction, delay, or embarrassment.

Abundance is not against God’s will.
It is part of it.
