“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
— Ephesians 2:10
This verse is a complete revelation of identity, creation, purpose, provision, and lifestyle. Each phrase carries a distinct truth that must be understood in its proper order.
“For We Are His Workmanship”
The word workmanship means the product of skill. It signifies something intentionally crafted, not randomly formed.
To say we are His workmanship means we are:
- The result of God’s divine ability
- The expression of His wisdom
- The manifestation of His design
We are not self-produced, self-improved, or self-defined. We are the expression of the manifold wisdom of God, created to reveal His craftsmanship, not human effort.
By the word “workmanship,” it means that we are the product of His skill. We are the expression of the manifold wisdom of God.
“Created in Christ Jesus”
We are created in Christ, not in the law.
Creation can only happen in Christ. The law cannot create; it can only expose and condemn. Scripture reveals that the law is a killer, but Christ is life.
Christ is the end of the law, meaning everything God intends to make, He makes in Christ. Outside of Christ, no true spiritual formation is possible. Therefore, our identity, nature, and purpose are all rooted in Him alone.
“For Good Works”
We are created for good works, not evil works.
Our inclusion in Christ is not so that our lifestyle deteriorates, but so that it improves. Good works are the natural outcome of being in Christ – not the requirement for entering Him.
God did not recreate us to produce darkness, confusion, or corruption, but to express goodness through a transformed life.
“Which God Prepared Beforehand”
These good works were prepared by God beforehand.
This means the works are not new, spontaneous, or humanly generated. They are the works of faith – the ways of God and the acts of God. They are not in progress; they are finished works.
God has already concluded what He expects us to walk in. Nothing is left for man to complete, add, or perfect.
“That We Should Walk in Them”
We are to walk in them.
Walking denotes a continuous lifestyle, not an occasional engagement. It is not a sporadic attempt to obey, but a constant, uninterrupted movement.
Walking also implies effortless movement. The road has already been cleared beforehand. You are not called to clear the path; you are only called to walk in it.
There are no works to be done – only a path to be followed.
The Necessity of Recreation
However, one must be fit in Christ before walking in this prepared path. This is why recreation—being made new – is necessary.
You cannot walk in a divine path with an old nature. The path is finished, but access comes only through Christ.
Knowledge Produces Rest
The knowledge of:
- The finished work of Christ
- God’s purpose for bringing us into Himself
…is paramount. This knowledge is the process of recreation. When truth is known, striving ends.
Rest in the Finished Work of Christ
The ultimate call of this verse is not labor, but rest.
When you understand that:
- You are His workmanship
- The works are prepared
- The path is cleared
You stop striving and begin walking.
Rest in the finished work of Christ.
