Text: Genesis 3:10–11
“And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?”
One of the most striking questions God asked in Scripture is this: “Who told you that you were naked?”
It was not just a question about Adam’s physical condition. It was a question about the source of his knowledge.
Knowledge rarely originates from ourselves. What we believe about life, God, and even about ourselves usually comes from something we read, something we saw, or something we heard from a particular source. The problem is that not every source carries the truth.
The Situation in the Garden
Adam and Eve had been given a clear command by God not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Yet they disobeyed. After eating the fruit, something changed immediately within them.
When God came into the garden, Adam said, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself.”
God’s response was very revealing: “Who told you that you were naked?”
From this story, we can observe three important truths.
1. They Were Told They Would Die — But They Did Not Understand It
God had warned them that if they ate from the tree, they would surely die. However, the nature of that death was not explained in detail. Yet Adam and Eve suddenly seemed to interpret death as something terrifying and immediate.
Their understanding of death appears to have come from another source, not from God’s own explanation.
2. They Hid Because They Misunderstood God
Adam and Eve hid themselves from God. But their hiding was not merely because they had sinned. They hid because they were afraid of what God might do to them.
Somewhere along the line, they had developed a fearful and distorted perception of God’s character. They believed God was someone to run away from instead of someone to run to.
This kind of fearful understanding of God did not originate from Him. It came from a deceptive voice that misrepresented God’s heart.
3. God Never Told Them They Would Become Naked
Another striking point is this: God never told Adam and Eve that eating the fruit would make them naked.
Yet after eating, they suddenly became conscious of their nakedness and were ashamed.
This is why God asked the profound question:
“Who told you that you were naked?”
The implication is clear: that information did not come from God.
The Power of Wrong Information
These three ideas – fear of death, fear of God, and shame about nakedness – were mental illusions introduced by a voice that was not God.
In the same way, many believers today are living their lives based on information that did not come from God. They have received distorted interpretations of Scripture, mixed with human opinions and the subtle lies of the enemy.
And those lies shape how they see themselves and how they relate to God.
The Questions We Must Ask
Just as God asked Adam a question, we must also ask ourselves similar questions:
- Who told you that God will never forgive you?
- Who told you that your life cannot become better?
- Who told you that God can no longer use you because you sinned?
- Who told you that you cannot be a good father to your children?
- Who told you that the Holy Spirit has abandoned you because of a mistake you made?
Many of these thoughts come from a source that is not God.
What God Actually Says
God’s voice speaks a very different message:
- Your sins are forgiven.
- You were created for a purpose.
- You carry visions that can liberate generations.
- You are a gateway through which destinies can be delivered.
- You are a father of godly generations.
Your life is not defined by information that comes from fear, condemnation, or deception.
Silence the Wrong Voice
The enemy often plants ideas that make us feel ashamed, condemned, and disqualified. But just like Adam in the garden, we must pause and ask:
“Who told me this?”
If the message does not align with the truth of God’s word, it is simply false information.
Silence the voice of deception and listen again to the voice of God. When the lies are removed, your life will begin to flourish according to God’s purpose.
Any bad news that did not come from God is not yours to carry.
Blessed eternally.
