The question “Who is Jesus Christ?” stands at the center of the Christian faith. The Bible presents Jesus not merely as a teacher, prophet, or historical figure, but as the unique and eternal Son of God, sent into the world to reveal God and accomplish salvation for humanity. To understand who Jesus is, we must look at how Scripture describes His identity, His nature, and His mission.
The Bible teaches that Jesus did not begin to exist in Bethlehem. He is eternal. John 1:1 declares, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” A few verses later, John 1:14 explains, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” This means that Jesus, the “Word,” is fully God and existed before creation.
Jesus Himself affirmed this truth. In John 8:58, He said, “Before Abraham was born, I am.” This statement identifies Him with the divine name revealed in Exodus 3:14, showing that He shares in God’s eternal nature.
One of the most profound truths in the Bible is that Jesus is both fully divine and fully human. Colossians 2:9 states, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” At the same time, He was born as a man, experienced hunger, fatigue, sorrow, and temptation (Hebrews 4:15).
This union of divine and human nature is essential. As God, Jesus has the power to save; as man, He is able to represent humanity. He is not half-God and half-man, but fully both – one person with two natures.
The Old Testament foretold the coming of a Savior, often called the Messiah (meaning “Anointed One”). Jesus is the fulfillment of these prophecies. Isaiah 53 describes a suffering servant who would bear the sins of many, while Micah 5:2 predicts the Messiah’s birth in Bethlehem.
In the New Testament, Jesus is clearly identified as this promised Savior. In Matthew 16:16, Peter declares, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus affirms this confession, showing that He is the long-awaited Redeemer sent by God.
Central to the identity of Jesus is His mission to save humanity from sin. The Bible teaches that all people have sinned (Romans 3:23) and are separated from God. Jesus came to bridge that gap.
Matthew 1:21 says, “You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” This salvation was accomplished through His death on the cross. 1 Peter 2:24 explains, “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross.”
Jesus’ sacrifice was not accidental – it was the purpose for which He came. By dying in the place of sinners, He satisfied God’s justice and made forgiveness possible.
The story of Jesus does not end with His death. The Bible declares that He rose from the dead on the third day. This resurrection is central to the Christian faith. Romans 1:4 says He was “declared to be the Son of God in power… by His resurrection from the dead.”
Because He is risen, Jesus is alive forever. Revelation 1:18 records Him saying, “I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!” His resurrection proves His authority over sin, death, and the grave.
Following His resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven and now reigns as Lord. Philippians 2:9–11 teaches that God has exalted Him above every name, and that every knee will bow to Him.
The Bible makes a bold and exclusive claim about Jesus: He is the only way to reconciliation with God. In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
This is not a statement of narrowness, but of clarity. Salvation is not found in human effort, religion, or morality, but in a person – Jesus Christ. Acts 4:12 reinforces this truth: “Salvation is found in no one else.”
Knowing who Jesus is leads to a necessary response. He is not merely to be studied, but to be believed and followed. John 1:12 says, “To all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”
Faith in Jesus involves trusting Him as Savior and submitting to Him as Lord. It is through this relationship that a person experiences forgiveness, new life, and eternal hope.
Who is Jesus Christ? According to the Bible, He is the eternal Son of God, fully divine and fully human, the promised Messiah, the Savior who died for sin, and the risen Lord who reigns forever. He is the only way to God and the source of eternal life.
To know Jesus is to know God, and to believe in Him is to receive the gift of salvation. His identity is not only a matter of doctrine; it is the foundation of faith and the hope of the world.
