The phrase “born again” is one of the most well-known expressions in Christianity, yet it is often misunderstood. It does not refer to a physical rebirth, but to a spiritual transformation. The concept comes directly from the words of Jesus and describes the essential change that must occur for a person to enter into a relationship with God.
The term “born again” comes from Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus in John 3. Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again” (John 3:3).
Nicodemus, a religious leader, misunderstood this and asked how someone could be physically born a second time. Jesus clarified in John 3:5: “No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.” This shows that being “born again” is a spiritual birth, not a physical one.
The Bible teaches that every person is born physically alive but spiritually separated from God because of sin. Ephesians 2:1 describes humanity as “dead in transgressions and sins.”
This does not mean people are physically dead, but spiritually lifeless – cut off from the life of God. Just as physical life begins with birth, spiritual life must also begin with a birth. That is why Jesus said being born again is not optional – it is necessary.
Without this new birth, a person cannot truly know God or enter His kingdom.
Being born again is an act of God in which He gives new spiritual life to a person. It is often called regeneration.
2 Corinthians 5:17 explains it this way: “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
This means:
- A new spiritual life begins
- The heart is changed
- Sin is no longer the controlling power
- A new desire to know and obey God is created
This transformation is not merely external (like behavior change), but internal – it affects the very nature of a person.
The new birth is accomplished by the Holy Spirit. Jesus said in John 3:6, “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.”
This means human effort cannot produce spiritual life. Just as you did not cause your physical birth, you cannot cause your spiritual birth. It is the work of God’s Spirit.
Titus 3:5 says, “He saved us… through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” The Spirit brings conviction of sin, opens the heart to truth, and gives new life.
So, how does a person become born again? Although the new birth is God’s work, the Bible clearly teaches that it is received through faith in Jesus Christ.
John 1:12–13 says, “Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God – children born… of God.”
This shows the connection:
- Believe in Jesus Christ
- Receive Him as Lord and Savior
- God gives new birth
Faith is the means, and God is the one who performs the transformation.
The Bible teaches that the new birth produces visible results in a person’s life. While no one becomes perfect, there is clear evidence of change over time.
Some signs include:
- A growing love for God (1 John 4:7)
- A desire to obey His Word (1 John 2:3)
- A turning away from habitual sin (1 John 3:9)
- Love for other believers (1 John 3:14)
These are not what cause the new birth, but they are the evidence that it has taken place.
Being born again also means entering into a new relationship with God. Instead of being separated, a person becomes part of God’s family.
Romans 8:15 says believers receive “the Spirit of adoption,” by whom they can call God “Father.” This is a personal and intimate relationship, not just a religious status.
It also brings assurance of eternal life. 1 Peter 1:23 says believers are “born again… through the living and enduring word of God.”
Being born again is not about adopting a religion – it is about receiving new life. Without it, a person remains spiritually dead. With it, they are made alive to God.
This is why Jesus spoke so strongly about it. It is the gateway to salvation, transformation, and eternal life.
To be “born again” means to receive new spiritual life from God through the Holy Spirit by faith in Jesus Christ. It is a complete inner transformation that changes a person’s heart, identity, and relationship with God.
It is not something earned or achieved – it is something given by God to those who believe. And it marks the beginning of a new life that will continue forever.
